Word to LaTeX Converter
Upload a .docx file and this Word to LaTeX converter rewrites it as LaTeX that compiles. Headings, lists, bold and italic text, tables and equations typed in Word all carry over, so you can move a paper or thesis chapter into LaTeX without retyping it.
How to convert Word to LaTeX
Upload the .docx file
Drop a Word document of up to 20 MB onto the upload area. It is read in your browser, where the text, headings, lists, tables and equations are extracted from the file's own structure, and the document is split into parts of a manageable size. Only the extracted text and equations are sent for conversion, never the original file.
Choose the parts to convert
Each part covers roughly two or three pages of text and is charged like one page, one credit. Leave out parts you do not need, such as an appendix or the reference list, and convert the rest. Free accounts convert up to 5 parts at a time, Starter 10 and Pro 20. Parts that fail are refunded automatically.
Edit and download
The Word to LaTeX result opens in an editor next to a compiled preview. Adjust anything you like, then download the .tex file. The conversion stays in your history, so you can return to it after making changes elsewhere. A thesis can be converted chapter by chapter, with each chapter saved as its own Word to LaTeX conversion. You can also copy individual sections straight from the editor into an existing LaTeX project.
What carries over from Word
Structure and emphasis
Word heading levels become \section, \subsection and \subsubsection, bulleted and numbered lists become itemize and enumerate, and bold and italic text keep their emphasis. Every word of the body is kept; nothing is summarised, rewritten or translated. Documents in Chinese keep their language and compile with Chinese fonts automatically. Footnotes kept in Word's separate footnote area are not read, so copy those into \footnote commands by hand.
Equations from the equation editor
Equations created with Word's built-in equation editor are read from the document itself, not from a picture, and rewritten as LaTeX math before conversion. Fractions, sums, integrals, matrices and accents keep their exact structure, which makes this Word to LaTeX route especially reliable for math-heavy documents.
Tables and images
Word tables become tabular environments with booktabs rules, one row per row and every cell in place. Images are not extracted from the .docx; each one is marked with a labelled box in the LaTeX, so you can add the image file with \includegraphics where it belongs. Captions written under the images in Word stay in the text, so you can turn them into caption commands.
Making the move to LaTeX
Clean up styles first
Documents that use Word's heading styles convert into the clearest structure. If headings were made by just enlarging the font, apply Heading 1 and Heading 2 before uploading, and the sections will come through as proper LaTeX sections. Accepting or rejecting tracked changes before converting also gives a cleaner Word to LaTeX result.
Templates and references
The result is a plain article you can paste into a journal or university template. Reference lists come over as text; to get a proper bibliography, collect the sources in a .bib file and cite them with \cite. The citation tools on this site can help with that. Convert the body once, then reuse it with different templates without converting again.
Going the other way?
If a co-author needs a Word version of your LaTeX later, the LaTeX to Word converter turns the source back into a .docx file with editable equations.

Word to LaTeX questions
- How to convert Word equation to LaTeX?
- Upload the .docx here: equations from Word's equation editor are converted into LaTeX math along with the rest of the document. For a single equation, Word can also show the LaTeX form when the equation input is switched to LaTeX.
- How to convert Word to LaTeX?
- Upload the .docx file, choose the parts to convert and start. Each part is rewritten as LaTeX and compiled, and the result opens in an editor where you can check it against the preview and download it. Check each part against the preview before downloading the Word to LaTeX result.
- How to insert table from Word to LaTeX?
- Convert the Word document here, and its tables come back as tabular environments, or paste the cells into the Excel to LaTeX tool for a single table.
- Can Pandoc convert Word to LaTeX?
- Yes, pandoc input.docx -o output.tex works and handles equations. The output often needs cleanup and is not compiled for you; this Word to LaTeX converter compiles each part and fixes errors before you see it. Pandoc also needs a local installation, while this page runs in the browser.
- Can Overleaf convert Word to LaTeX?
- Overleaf does not import .docx files as LaTeX. Convert the document here, download the .tex file and upload it to a new Overleaf project. Images saved from Word can be uploaded to the same project.
- Does the conversion keep my formatting?
- It keeps the structure: headings, lists, emphasis, tables and equations. Fonts, colours, spacing and page layout are left to LaTeX, because the document class or journal template decides those. Choose the document class or template you need and paste the converted body into it.
- Can ChatGPT convert Word to LaTeX?
- You can paste text into a chatbot, but equations often arrive garbled and the result is not compiled. Here, Word equations are read from the file's structure and every part is compiled.
- Is there a free Word to LaTeX converter online?
- Conversion uses one credit per part, and parts that fail are refunded. Pandoc is a free offline alternative if you are comfortable fixing its output by hand. Credits come with each plan on the pricing page.
- How is this different from Mathpix?
- Mathpix is built around OCR of images and PDFs. This converter reads the .docx structure directly, so Word equations and tables are taken from the file rather than recognised from a picture. Both approaches compile their output, but only reading the file keeps Word equations exact.
- What happens to images in the Word file?
- Each image is marked with a labelled box at its position. Save the images from Word and add them with \includegraphics in those places.
- How long can the Word document be?
- Files of up to 20 MB are accepted. Long documents are split into parts of about two or three pages each, and you convert as many parts as your plan allows at a time. A typical thesis chapter fits in a single conversion on the Pro plan.
- Are Word equations converted?
- Yes. Equations made with Word's equation editor are converted exactly. Older equations stored as pictures are not read; screenshot those and use the equation to LaTeX converter. Inline equations stay inline, and displayed equations become equation environments.
