URL to BibTeX
Paste the address of a web page, blog post, news story or journal article and get a BibTeX entry with its title, authors, date, link and the day you accessed it. This URL to BibTeX generator reads the citation data the page publishes, so there is nothing to fill in by hand and no account to create.
What Is URL to BibTeX?
From a Web Link to a BibTeX Entry
Most pages carry hidden metadata for search engines and reference managers: a title, authors, a publication date and often a journal name. URL to BibTeX reads that metadata and writes it as an entry you can cite in LaTeX.
URL to BibTeX Citation for Websites
Ordinary pages become @misc entries with the link in a howpublished \url command, a url field, an urldate and an "Accessed" note, so the reference works with plain BibTeX, natbib and biblatex styles alike.
Journal Article Links Become @article
When a publisher page names its journal, the entry turns into @article with volume, issue, pages and DOI filled in. That covers most links from Nature, Springer, Elsevier, PLOS, IEEE and university repositories.

Instead of guessing from the visible text, it checks Highwire citation tags, Dublin Core, Open Graph and schema.org data in turn, and leaves a field out rather than inventing it. That keeps URL to BibTeX results consistent from one site to the next.
Got a DOI? Use It Instead
For journal papers the DOI is the more reliable identifier, because it resolves even when a publisher changes its site. A DOI lookup returns the registry’s full record.
Open DOI to BibTeXHow to Use It in 3 Steps
Step 1: Copy the Page Address
Open the page you want to cite and copy the link from the address bar. A bare domain such as example.org/post works too; https is added for you.
Step 2: Get the BibTeX Entry
Paste it above and press Get BibTeX. URL to BibTeX reads the page once, and the entry appears in a few seconds with today’s date as the access date.
Step 3: Check, Save and Cite
Glance over the title and authors, add anything the page did not publish, then save the entry to your .bib file and cite it with \cite and its key.

URL to BibTeX FAQ
- Do APA citations include URL?
- Yes for web pages and online works without a DOI: APA 7 ends the reference with the full URL. If the work has a DOI, give that as a https://doi.org link instead of the page address.
- Does MLA citation include URL?
- MLA 9 recommends including the URL for web sources, usually without the http:// or https:// prefix, though instructors may say otherwise. A DOI, when there is one, is preferred over the URL.
- How to cite a website in BibTeX?
- Use a @misc entry with author, title, year, the link in howpublished with \url, and an access note; biblatex users can use @online with url and urldate. Pasting the link into this URL to BibTeX tool writes all of that for you.
- Does Chicago citation use URLs?
- Yes. Chicago adds a URL, or better a DOI, at the end of notes and bibliography entries for online sources, and suggests an access date only when no publication or revision date is given.
- Do you put a URL in a parenthetical citation?
- No. In-text citations in APA and MLA give only the author and date or page; the URL belongs in the full reference list entry. In LaTeX, \cite handles the in-text part for you.
- How to make URL fit into citation?
- In LaTeX, \url breaks long links at slashes and dots. If a link still overflows, load the xurl package, which allows a break after any character, and keep the address unshortened.
- How to add URL in BibTeX?
- Add a url field, which natbib and biblatex styles print. For plain styles that ignore it, put the link in howpublished as \url followed by the address in braces. The entries here include both.
- How to include URL in citation?
- Place the full address at the end of the reference, after the title and date, and make sure it opens the exact page cited. In LaTeX, load url or hyperref so the link is typeset and clickable.
- Can I convert a URL to BibTeX online?
- Yes. Paste the link above and the entry appears in a few seconds. Nothing is installed, and you can copy the result or download it as a .bib file.
- Can I get BibTeX for a GitHub repository from its URL?
- Yes, you get a @misc entry with the repository’s name and description. If the repository has a CITATION.cff file, GitHub’s "Cite this repository" button gives the authors’ preferred entry, which is better still.
- How do I add the access date for a URL in BibTeX?
- biblatex reads an urldate field in YYYY-MM-DD form; plain BibTeX styles need a note such as "Accessed: 2026-11-05". Entries from this URL to BibTeX generator carry both, dated the day you look the page up.
- Can I add a URL to a journal article entry in BibTeX?
- Yes, add a url field to the @article entry. Many styles print it only when no DOI is present, so for journal papers the doi field usually matters more.
- Is the URL to BibTeX tool free?
- Yes. It needs no account and has no daily limit; because the server fetches each page, every visitor can run one lookup every three seconds.
- Where does the citation information come from?
- From the page itself: Highwire citation tags first, then Dublin Core, Open Graph, schema.org JSON-LD and finally the page title. Nothing comes from a third-party database.
- When do I get @article instead of @misc?
- When the page states the journal it belongs to, which publisher sites do through their citation tags. Blogs, news stories, documentation and other pages become @misc.
- Why is the author or year missing?
- The page does not publish them in its metadata, which is common for documentation and company sites. Rather than guess, the entry leaves the field out, so add it by hand if you know it.
- Why can’t it read some pages?
- Pages behind a login, a bot check or a cookie wall, pages that only build their content with JavaScript, and direct links to PDFs or images cannot be read. Private and local network addresses are refused for security.
- Which LaTeX packages do I need for the URL?
- The howpublished field uses \url, so load the url or hyperref package. With biblatex, the url and urldate fields are printed without anything extra.
- Do you store the pages I look up?
- No. The page is fetched once to read its metadata, the entry is sent back to you, and neither the page nor the link is saved.
