Typst to LaTeX
Paste Typst or upload a .typ file and this Typst to LaTeX converter writes LaTeX as you type. Headings, lists, figures, tables and footnotes carry over, Typst math becomes LaTeX math, and labels, references and citations become \label, \ref and \cite.

\section{Energy of a field}\label{sec:energy}
For a field $\varphi: \mathbb{R}^3 \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ the \emph{energy} is
\begin{equation}
E [\varphi] = \frac{1}{2} \int_{\mathbb{R}^3} | \nabla \varphi |^2 \mathrm{d} V
\label{eq:energy}
\end{equation}
If $\varphi$ minimises Equation~\eqref{eq:energy}, then $\Delta \varphi = 0$
(see \cite[ch. 2]{evans}).

\begin{itemize}
\item Table~\ref{tab:methods} lists \textbf{two} methods.
\item Boundary terms vanish when $\varphi \rightarrow 0$.

Convert a fileHow to convert Typst to LaTeX
Paste or upload the .typ file
Paste a whole document or a single section, or upload a .typ file exported from the Typst web app. The Typst to LaTeX conversion runs in your browser on every keystroke, so the LaTeX appears at once and your paper stays on your machine. Files up to 2 MB are accepted, enough for a full thesis.
Choose body only or a complete document
Body only gives the text between \begin{document} and \end{document}, ready for a journal or conference template, and lists the packages to add. Complete document adds an article preamble with those packages, so it compiles on its own. Untick Numbered sections for \section* headings.
Copy, then compile
Copy the LaTeX or download it as a .tex file, put your images and .bib file next to it, and compile with pdflatex and BibTeX, or upload everything to Overleaf. The Typst bibliography line becomes \bibliography with the plain style, which you can swap for the journal's own. If a number shows as ?? after the Typst to LaTeX step, run LaTeX once more so the references settle.
What converts, and how
Markup and functions
= headings become \section and \subsection, *strong* and _emph_ become \textbf and \emph, and - and + lists become itemize and enumerate. #link, #footnote, #quote and raw code convert too, and the text inside #align, #text, #box or #block is kept without its styling. Typst comments, both // and /* */, are removed.
Typst math becomes LaTeX math
Every formula is rewritten: a/b becomes \frac{a}{b}, RR becomes \mathbb{R}, mat(…) a pmatrix, cases(…) a cases block, abs(x) |x| and norm(v) \|v\|. When the document numbers equations, display math becomes equation environments, and multi-line formulas become aligned or gathered blocks.
Labels, references and citations
A <label> on a heading, equation or figure becomes \label, and @label becomes Section~\ref, Equation~\eqref, Figure~\ref or Table~\ref, so the numbers stay right after the Typst to LaTeX conversion. @key for a source becomes \cite{key}, with a page locator kept as \cite[p. 3]{key}. Labels keep their exact names, so any \ref you add by hand later still points to the right place.
Before you submit
What has no LaTeX version
#set, #show and #let rules style a Typst document; in LaTeX the class and preamble do that, so they are dropped. Simple #let values such as a name or a number are filled in where they are used; functions defined with #let and functions from packages keep their text and are listed under the output.
Fitting a journal template
Choose Body only, paste the result between \begin{document} and \end{document} of the journal's template, and add the listed packages to its preamble. Title and author usually go into the template's own \title and \author commands. After the Typst to LaTeX conversion, compile once in the template to catch any package clash.
Starting from LaTeX instead?
If you want to move a .tex paper into Typst, the LaTeX to Typst converter goes the other way, expanding your macros and keeping equation labels. With both, you can keep drafting in Typst and run a Typst to LaTeX pass only when a venue asks for source files.

Typst and LaTeX questions
- Is there a free Typst to LaTeX converter online?
- Yes, this one. This Typst to LaTeX converter is free, needs no account, converts as you type and keeps your file in the browser. The Typst to LaTeX result can be copied or downloaded as a .tex file.
- How do I convert Typst to LaTeX with Pandoc?
- Recent Pandoc versions read Typst: run pandoc paper.typ -o paper.tex. Pandoc works offline on many files; this page needs no install and shows the LaTeX as you type.
- Does Typst compile to LaTeX?
- No. Typst is its own typesetting system and compiles straight to PDF, PNG or SVG without LaTeX. To get .tex source, convert the markup with a tool like this one.
- How is Typst math converted to LaTeX?
- Each formula is parsed and rewritten in LaTeX: sqrt(x) becomes \sqrt{x}, root(3, x) \sqrt[3]{x}, sum_(i=1)^n \sum_{i = 1}^n and arrow.r.long \longrightarrow. Formulas with parts that could not be converted are listed under the output.
- Can Typst replace LaTeX for journal submissions?
- Not everywhere yet. Many journals and conferences still require LaTeX source in their own class. You can write in Typst, then do a Typst to LaTeX pass and paste the result into the template.
- Are Typst tables converted to LaTeX tables?
- Yes. #table becomes tabular with booktabs rules, the column alignment from align and a bold header row. A table inside #figure becomes a table environment with \caption and \label. Merged cells are not merged.
- Can I move a Typst document into a LaTeX template?
- Yes. Choose Body only and paste the output into the template's document body, then add the packages listed under the output to its preamble.
- How do I make Typst look like LaTeX?
- Add #set text(font: "New Computer Modern"), #set par(justify: true, first-line-indent: 1.8em) and #set heading(numbering: "1.1"). That gives the Computer Modern look without converting anything.
- What happens to set, show and let rules?
- They are dropped. They style the Typst document, which LaTeX does in the class and preamble, so restyle with the template you paste into.
- Which Typst functions are converted?
- heading, strong, emph, strike, link, footnote, figure, image, table, quote, list, enum, cite, raw and line. align, text, box, block and similar layout functions keep their text.
- How are citations and the bibliography converted?
- @key becomes \cite{key} and @key[p. 3] becomes \cite[p. 3]{key}. #bibliography("refs.bib") becomes \bibliographystyle{plain} and \bibliography{refs}, so the same .bib file works.
