LaTeX to Typst

Paste LaTeX or upload a .tex file and this LaTeX to Typst converter writes Typst markup as you type. Sections, lists, tables, figures and citations carry over, your own macros are expanded, and every formula is rewritten in Typst math with equation labels kept.

Converted in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

Typst

#set math.equation(numbering: "(1)", supplement: none)

= Energy of a field

For a field $phi.alt colon RR^3 -> RR$ the #emph[energy] is

$ E [phi.alt] = 1/2 integral_(RR^3) lr(|nabla phi.alt|)^2 thin d V . $ <eq:energy>

#strong[Theorem.] If $phi.alt$ minimises (@eq:energy), then $Delta phi.alt = 0$.

- See #strong[Evans] @evans[ch. 2].
- Boundary terms vanish when $phi.alt -> 0$.

Citations need a #bibliography("refs.bib") call in your document.

Only have a PDF or a photo of the paper? Convert it to LaTeX first, then on to Typst.

How to convert LaTeX to Typst

Paste or upload the .tex file

Paste a whole document or just a section, or upload a .tex file from Overleaf or your own machine. The LaTeX to Typst conversion runs in your browser on every keystroke, so the Typst appears at once and your paper never leaves the page.

Choose markup or a complete document

Markup only gives Typst content to paste into a template you already use. Complete document adds #set rules for an A4 page, 11 pt text and justified paragraphs, a centered title from \title, and a #bibliography line when the source cites anything. Tick Numbered headings to keep LaTeX-style section numbers.

Copy, then compile

Copy the Typst or download it as a .typ file, then open it in the Typst web app or run typst compile paper.typ. Put the images and the .bib file next to it; Typst reads BibTeX files directly, so your references need no conversion.

What converts, and how

Structure and text

\section and \subsection become = and ==, \textbf and \emph become #strong[…] and #emph[…], and itemize, enumerate and description become Typst lists. Theorem, lemma and proof environments become bold or italic run-in headings, \footnote becomes #footnote[…] and \href becomes #link. \chapter works too, so theses and books keep their structure.

Equations, labels and references

Every formula is rewritten in Typst math: \frac{a}{b} becomes a/b, \mathbf{v} upright(bold(v)), \iint integral.double and cases becomes cases(…). align becomes an aligned block. A \label on a numbered equation becomes a Typst label such as <eq:energy>, \eqref becomes (@eq:energy), and equation numbering is switched on.

Macros, tables, figures and citations

Your \newcommand, \def and \DeclareMathOperator macros are expanded before the LaTeX to Typst conversion, so \R becomes RR. tabular becomes #table with the column alignment, figures become #figure with their caption, and \cite, \citep and \citet become @key, with page locators kept.

Before you switch

What does not come across

TikZ pictures, page layout commands such as \vspace and \setlength, and package options have no Typst equivalent here, so they are dropped. Commands the converter does not know keep the text of their arguments and are listed under the output, so you can see what to fix. Check that list after each LaTeX to Typst run, and compare the PDF with the original once.

Templates and class files

A journal class or your own .sty sets fonts, margins and the title block, which do not translate line by line. Run the LaTeX to Typst converter on the content, then paste it into a Typst template from Typst Universe that matches the venue.

Need LaTeX back?

Many journals still accept only .tex. Write in Typst, then use the Typst to LaTeX converter to produce a LaTeX version for submission, with the same math conversion in reverse.

LaTeX and Typst questions

Is Typst better than LaTeX?
For many writers, yes: Typst compiles in milliseconds, its syntax is easier to read, errors are clearer and scripting is built in. LaTeX still has decades of packages, TikZ and the journal templates most publishers require. Notes, theses and slides suit Typst well; for a .tex submission, keep LaTeX or convert back.
How to number equations in Typst?
Add #set math.equation(numbering: "(1)"), put a label such as <eq:energy> after the closing $ of the equation, and refer to it with @eq:energy. The LaTeX to Typst converter does all three for each labelled equation.
How to do an area integral in Typst?
Write integral.double for ∬, integral.triple for ∭ and integral.cont for a contour integral ∮, with limits as usual: $integral.double_D f dif A$. LaTeX's \iint, \iiint and \oint convert to these names.
How to do not subset in Typst?
Use subset.not for ⊄. Other negations follow the same pattern: subset.eq.not, in.not for ∉ and eq.not, or !=, for ≠. The converter turns \not\subset into subset.not.
Is there a free LaTeX to Typst converter online?
Yes, this one. This LaTeX to Typst converter is free, needs no account, converts as you type and keeps your file in the browser.
How do I convert LaTeX to Typst with Pandoc?
Run pandoc paper.tex -o paper.typ. Pandoc works offline and on many files at once; this page needs no install, shows the result as you type and lists anything it could not convert.
How are LaTeX formulas converted to Typst math?
Each formula is parsed and rewritten in Typst math: \sqrt[3]{x} becomes root(3, x), \mathcal{L} cal(L), \text{if} a quoted "if" and \left( \right) plain brackets, which Typst sizes itself. Anything that cannot be converted is listed under the output.
Where do I find the Typst name for a LaTeX symbol?
Search the Typst symbols table on this site, which lists each symbol with its LaTeX command and Typst name, or paste the formula here and read the result.
Can it convert a LaTeX table to Typst?
Yes. tabular, tabularx and longtable become #table with the right number of columns, l, c and r alignment and booktabs-style rules. The caption goes into the #figure around it. Cells merged with \multicolumn are not merged yet, so check those rows after the LaTeX to Typst conversion.
Can I convert a LaTeX template to Typst?
The content converts, but a template is mostly layout: class options, fonts, margins and the title block. Pick a Typst template for the same journal or university and paste the LaTeX to Typst output into it.
Can I use LaTeX math directly inside Typst?
Yes, with the mitex package from Typst Universe, which renders LaTeX math inside a Typst document. Converting instead gives you native Typst math that is easier to edit later.
What happens to packages and commands Typst has no match for?
Your own macros are expanded first. Unknown commands keep the text of their arguments and are listed under the output; TikZ pictures and layout commands are dropped.
