PDF to LaTeX Converter
Upload a PDF, choose the pages you need and this PDF to LaTeX converter rebuilds them as LaTeX source. Text, equations, tables and figures come back as editable code, and every page is compiled and corrected before you see it.
How to convert PDF to LaTeX
Upload the PDF
Drop a PDF on the upload area or pick it from your computer. Thumbnails of the first 100 pages appear in the browser, so you can see exactly what you are about to convert before any page leaves your device. Password-protected files need to be unlocked first, and very large files open faster if you split them into chapters.
Pick the pages
Select only the pages you need, such as one chapter, a proof or a page of tables. Free accounts convert up to 5 pages per file, Starter up to 10 and Pro up to 20, and each page uses one credit. Picking pages also keeps a PDF to LaTeX job short: front matter, blank pages and reference lists rarely need converting.
Edit, preview and download
The PDF to LaTeX result opens in an editor with a compiled preview next to the source. Fix anything you like, then download the .tex file, a .zip with the figures, or a Word file. Every conversion is also saved to your history, so you can come back to it later and download it again.
What the converter reads
Equations and math
Inline and displayed formulas become amsmath code: fractions, sums, integrals, matrices, cases and aligned derivations. Numbered equations keep a numbered environment, so a PDF to LaTeX conversion of a paper still reads like the original. A digit or symbol that cannot be read clearly is marked [unreadable] instead of guessed, so nothing wrong slips silently into your equations.
Tables and structure
Headings become sections, lists become itemize and enumerate, and tables are rebuilt as tabular environments with their rows and columns. Bold, italics, footnotes and theorem-style blocks are carried over where the page shows them. Numbered theorems keep their printed numbers, and the content is transcribed exactly: nothing is solved, corrected or summarised. Page headers and running titles can be deleted in the editor in seconds if you do not need them.
Figures and scans
Charts, photos and drawings are cropped from the page and placed where they appear, so the download includes the image files. Scanned and photographed PDFs work too, because every page is read as an image, not as embedded text. That also means PDF to LaTeX works on files whose text layer is missing or garbled, which is common in older journal archives.
Getting a clean result
Every page is compiled
Before a page is returned, its LaTeX is compiled, and compile errors are fixed automatically. If a page still cannot be converted, its credit is returned, so a failed PDF to LaTeX page costs nothing. Documents that contain Chinese compile with Chinese fonts automatically.
Better input, better output
Digital PDFs give the most accurate code. For scans, use at least 200 dpi and pages that are straight and evenly lit. Very small print or heavy shading makes symbols harder to read, so crop such pages or convert them on their own. Your uploaded pages are sent to our model provider for conversion and are not stored on our servers; only the LaTeX result is kept in your history. For long reports, convert a few representative pages first to judge the quality before running the rest of the PDF to LaTeX job.
Need it in Word instead?
Once the LaTeX is right, the same editor exports a Word document. You can also paste any LaTeX source into the LaTeX to Word converter, which keeps equations editable in Word.

PDF to LaTeX questions
- How to insert PDF into LaTeX?
- To place an existing PDF inside a document, load the pdfpages package and write \includepdf[pages=-]{file.pdf}, or use \includegraphics for a single-page PDF figure. To turn the PDF content itself into editable code, use the PDF to LaTeX converter on this page.
- How to convert PDF to LaTeX?
- Upload the PDF here, select the pages and start the conversion. The pages are read, rewritten as LaTeX and compiled, and the result opens in an editor where you can check it against a preview and download the source. A progress bar shows how many pages are done, and the result opens as soon as every page has been compiled.
- Can Overleaf convert PDF to LaTeX?
- No. Overleaf compiles LaTeX into PDF but has no PDF to LaTeX import. Convert the PDF here, download the .zip, and upload it to a new Overleaf project to keep editing there.
- How to get LaTeX code from PDF?
- If the PDF came from arXiv, the original source is often available under its "Other formats" link. For any other PDF, the converter reconstructs the code from what is printed on the page.
- Can ChatGPT convert a PDF to LaTeX?
- General chatbots can transcribe a page, but they do not compile the output, so missing braces and unknown commands are common on long pages. This converter compiles every page and fixes errors before returning it.
- How is this different from Mathpix?
- Mathpix is a strong OCR tool for math. This converter focuses on complete documents: it lets you choose pages, compiles the result, places figures and opens everything in an editor with a preview and Word export.
- Can Pandoc convert a PDF to LaTeX?
- No. Pandoc reads structured formats such as Word, Markdown and HTML, but it cannot read PDF. A PDF only stores positioned glyphs, so it has to be read visually, which is what this converter does.
- Is there a free PDF to LaTeX converter?
- Conversion uses credits, one per page, and pages that fail are refunded. Select only the pages you need to keep the cost down. The many other LaTeX tools on this site, such as the Markdown and HTML converters, are free.
- Can it convert a handwritten or scanned PDF?
- Yes. Scanned and handwritten pages are read as images, so neat handwriting, lecture notes and photocopies all work. Clear, dark writing gives the best result. Each page of a scanned PDF to LaTeX job is handled on its own, so one poor page never spoils the others.
- Can it convert slides to Beamer?
- Slides are converted as ordinary pages: their text, equations and figures become LaTeX. To present them, place each page's content inside a Beamer frame environment.
- Can I convert a PDF to LaTeX with Python?
- Python libraries such as PyMuPDF extract text, but not math or table structure, so the result needs heavy rework. For documents with formulas, a visual converter like this one saves that step.
- How many pages can I convert?
- The upload shows up to 100 pages of a PDF. Each conversion takes up to 5 pages on a free account, 10 on Starter and 20 on Pro; convert longer documents in several parts. Each part appears separately in your history.
