LaTeX Equation Editor
Type LaTeX or click the toolbar to build an equation, and this LaTeX equation editor renders it as you go. Copy the code wrapped the way your document needs it, or copy MathML to paste an editable equation into Word.

Convert a fileHow to use the LaTeX equation editor
Type or click to build the equation
Write LaTeX in the box, or use the toolbar: each button inserts its code at the cursor. Select some text first and a structure such as a fraction or square root wraps around it.
Watch the preview as you type
The LaTeX equation editor renders with KaTeX in your browser on every keystroke. A missing brace or unknown command is marked in red and named below the preview.
Copy it the way your document needs
Choose a wrapper: inline math, a display block, a numbered equation or an align environment for several lines, with an optional label for \ref. The code updates with it, and the note below lists the packages, such as amsmath, that the equation needs.
Equations in Word, Google Docs and slides
Microsoft Word
Copy MathML and paste it into Word to get a native, editable equation. Word for Microsoft 365 also takes LaTeX directly: insert an equation with Alt+=, choose LaTeX on the Equation tab, paste the code from the LaTeX equation editor and convert it to Professional.
Google Docs and Slides
The Google Docs equation tool, under Insert, accepts shortcuts such as \frac and \alpha followed by a space, but not whole LaTeX expressions. For anything longer, send it from the LaTeX equation editor to the share page and insert it as an image. Slides has no equation tool, so an image is the usual route.
PowerPoint, Canvas and other editors
PowerPoint uses the same equation engine as Word, so the LaTeX and MathML routes both work. Canvas and many other learning platforms have a math editor with an advanced LaTeX view: paste the code there. Where nothing else works, use a PNG or SVG image.
Writing better equations
Start from a template
The formula buttons load common equations, from the quadratic formula to the Fourier transform. They are a quick start when you only need to change a few symbols.
Several lines that line up
For a derivation, choose align and put & before each equals sign and \\ at the end of every line except the last. Each line gets its own number; add \nonumber to a line, or pick align*, to drop them. The LaTeX equation editor previews the aligned result.
Symbols and packages
For symbols not on the toolbar, our symbol tables list each one with its package. Most commands work in plain LaTeX with amsmath and amssymb. The preview follows KaTeX, so a few rare commands may render here but need a package in your document.

Equation editor questions
- How to use equation editor in Word?
- Press Alt+= or choose Insert > Equation, then type: x^2 and a/b become a superscript and a fraction after a space. To use LaTeX, write it in this LaTeX equation editor and paste it into Word’s LaTeX mode, or copy MathML.
- Where is equation editor in Word?
- On the Insert tab, in the Symbols group, click Equation. The old Microsoft Equation Editor 3.0 was removed in 2018, so current versions only have this built-in tool.
- How to use equation editor in Google Docs?
- Choose Insert > Equation, then type shortcuts such as \frac, \sqrt or \alpha followed by a space. It does not read full LaTeX, so for long formulas insert an image of the equation instead.
- What is equation editor?
- A tool for writing mathematical notation without drawing it: Word, Google Docs and PowerPoint each have one. A LaTeX equation editor like this one writes standard LaTeX code that works in any LaTeX document.
- How to do subscripts in equation editor Word?
- Type the base, an underscore and the subscript, then a space: x_1 becomes x with a subscript 1. Use ^ for a superscript. LaTeX uses the same characters, with braces for more than one character, as in x_{12}.
- How to use equation editor in PowerPoint?
- Choose Insert > Equation. PowerPoint shares Word’s equation engine, so you can type LaTeX in its LaTeX mode or paste MathML copied from the LaTeX equation editor.
- How to use equation editor in Canvas?
- In the Rich Content Editor, open the math equation tool and switch to the advanced view, which takes LaTeX. Paste the code from here without $ signs.
- How to align equal signs in Word equation editor?
- Put all lines in one equation, separated with Shift+Enter, then right-click and choose Align at =. In LaTeX, use the align environment with & before each equals sign.
- How to use LaTeX in Word equation editor?
- In Word for Microsoft 365, insert an equation, choose LaTeX on the Equation tab, type or paste the code, then choose Convert > Professional. Older versions need MathML or an add-in.
- How to use LaTeX equation editor?
- Type LaTeX in the box or click the toolbar, check the preview, pick how the equation should be wrapped, and copy the code into your .tex file or Overleaf.
- Why is equation editor greyed out in Word?
- The document is usually open in Compatibility Mode, as a .doc file. Convert it with File > Info > Convert, or save it as .docx, and the Equation button becomes available.
- Can equation editor do math for you on Microsoft Word?
- No, it only formats equations. OneNote’s Math Assistant can solve many of them. This LaTeX equation editor does not calculate either; it writes and renders the notation.
- How to change font in equation editor?
- Word sets equations in Cambria Math and accepts only math fonts. In LaTeX, the document’s math font applies; use \mathrm, \mathbf or \mathsf from the Accents & fonts tab for single symbols.
- How to enter a fraction in equation editor?
- In Word, type a/b and a space. In LaTeX, write \frac{a}{b}, or click the fraction button in the LaTeX equation editor, which wraps any selected text as the numerator.
- How to open equation editor in Word shortcut?
- Press Alt+= on Windows or Control+= on a Mac. The equation appears at the cursor, ready to type into.
- Is this LaTeX equation editor free to use online?
- Yes. It runs in your browser with no sign-up and no limit on how many equations you write or copy.
- Can I save an equation from the editor as PNG or SVG?
- Yes. The share button opens it on our share page, which downloads PNG or SVG images and gives you a link.
- Is there a visual LaTeX equation editor?
- This LaTeX equation editor is half visual: you click symbols and structures instead of remembering commands, and see the rendered result at once, while the LaTeX code stays in view to adjust.
- Which LaTeX commands does the equation editor support?
- The preview uses KaTeX, which covers most math mode, including amsmath environments such as align, cases and matrices. Document commands and packages such as TikZ do not render.
- Is the equation I type sent to a server?
- No. Rendering, MathML and the code all happen in your browser. The share link keeps the equation after the # in the address, which browsers do not send to servers.
