Image to LaTeX Converter

Paste a screenshot or upload a photo and this image to LaTeX converter turns it into source code you can compile. Equations, text, tables and diagrams on the picture all come back as LaTeX, checked by compiling before you see it.

How to convert an image to LaTeX

Add the picture

Drag a PNG, JPEG or WebP file onto the upload area, choose it from your device, or simply press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac) anywhere on this page to paste a screenshot from the clipboard. Phone photos of a whiteboard or a textbook page work just as well as crisp screenshots. Lecture slides captured during a class, a figure from a paper or a formula from a website are all typical image to LaTeX jobs.

Start the conversion

The picture is shown as a thumbnail so you can confirm it is the right one. One image is one page and uses one credit. Large photos are split into overlapping strips behind the scenes, so dense pages keep their detail instead of being shrunk. If the picture holds several separate formulas, they are all transcribed in the order they appear, top to bottom.

Check and copy the code

The image to LaTeX result opens next to a compiled preview. Compare the two, adjust any line in the editor, then copy the code or download it as a .tex file, or as a .zip when the picture contained figures. Every conversion is also saved in your history, so the code is still there if you close the tab.

What it recognises

Equations and symbols

Fractions, roots, sums, integrals, limits, matrices, Greek letters and operators are written in standard amsmath notation. Displayed formulas use equation or align, and inline math stays inline, so the code drops straight into your own document. The image to LaTeX output uses only standard packages, so it works in Overleaf, in a local TeX installation and in editors that render math.

Text, lists and tables

Paragraphs, headings and bullet or numbered lists are kept, and tables become tabular environments with booktabs rules. Theorem, definition and example blocks get their own environments, which makes an image to LaTeX conversion of lecture slides or textbook pages tidy from the start. Text in Chinese and other languages is kept in its original language, and documents with Chinese compile with Chinese fonts automatically.

Diagrams and photos inside the picture

If the image contains a chart, a sketch or a photo, that region is cropped out and placed as a figure where it appears. Its caption is transcribed as text below it. Diagrams are kept as images rather than redrawn, so they look exactly like the original. Up to several figures per picture are cropped, and each one is saved as its own file in the download.

Tips for accurate results

Use a sharp, straight image

Fill the frame with the content, keep the page flat and avoid shadows and glare. A screenshot at normal zoom is ideal. For handwriting, dark ink on plain paper reads far better than pencil on lined or squared paper. When a picture is mostly blank margin, crop it first so the content takes up most of the image. Rotate sideways photos before uploading, so the text reads left to right.

Nothing is guessed

The converter transcribes exactly what is on the picture: it never solves, corrects or completes the math. Where a character cannot be read with confidence, it writes [unreadable] in bold so you can fix that spot instead of trusting a wrong symbol. That behaviour makes the image to LaTeX result safe to rely on for exams, papers and lecture notes, where a silently changed sign would be costly.

Only need one formula?

For a single equation you want to build or adjust yourself, the visual equation editor writes the LaTeX as you click, with a live preview. It is free and needs no account.

Image to LaTeX questions

How to insert image into LaTeX?
Load the graphicx package, then write \includegraphics[width=0.8\linewidth]{photo.png} inside a figure environment with a \caption. That embeds the picture as an image. To turn what is written on the picture into editable LaTeX, use this image to LaTeX converter instead.
What is the best image to LaTeX converter?
It depends on the input. For single formulas, many tools do well. For whole pages with text, tables and figures, look for one that compiles its output and lets you edit it with a preview, as this one does. Compiling matters most: code that looks right but does not compile costs more time than it saves.
Can ChatGPT convert an image to LaTeX?
It can transcribe a clear picture, but it does not compile the result or crop figures, and on unclear symbols it tends to guess. This converter compiles every page, fixes errors and marks unreadable characters instead.
Is there a free image to LaTeX converter online?
Converting an image uses one credit, and the credit is returned if the page fails. The site also offers free tools, such as the equation editor and table generator, for writing LaTeX by hand.
Can it convert a picture of an equation?
Yes. A screenshot or photo of a single equation, or of a whole derivation, comes back as amsmath code, with multi-line work in an align environment. Each line of a derivation is checked against the picture, so signs and indices match the original.
Does it read handwritten images?
Yes. Neat handwriting in dark ink converts well, including math. Very faint pencil, crossed-out work or writing over grid lines lowers accuracy. Photos of a whiteboard after class are a common image to LaTeX use.
Is there a Chrome extension?
No extension is needed: take a screenshot with your system's screenshot tool, open this page and press Ctrl+V or Cmd+V to paste it straight into the image to LaTeX converter. On a Mac, Cmd+Ctrl+Shift+4 copies a screenshot area straight to the clipboard.
Is there an image to LaTeX API?
There is no public API. Conversions run through this page, and each result stays in your history so you can download it again.
Which image formats work?
PNG, JPEG and WebP images, plus screenshots pasted from the clipboard. For a multi-page scan, upload it as a PDF so you can choose the pages. Very large photos are scaled and split automatically, so you do not need to resize them first.
How do I convert a screenshot?
Copy the screenshot to the clipboard, click anywhere on this page outside a text field and press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac). It appears as an upload, ready to convert. On Windows, Win+Shift+S captures an area to the clipboard, ready to paste.
How much does a conversion cost?
One credit per image. Credits for pages that cannot be converted are returned automatically, and plans on the pricing page add monthly credits. Your balance is shown next to the convert button before you start.
