arXiv Citation Generator
Paste an arXiv ID such as 1706.03762, an old-style ID such as hep-th/9711200, or any arXiv link, and get a ready arXiv citation in APA, MLA, Chicago, IEEE, Harvard or another style. The tool also checks whether the preprint has since appeared in a journal, so you can cite the published version instead. Each arXiv citation is built from the official arXiv record, not typed by hand.
Or fill in the fields below by hand. Check every citation against the source before you submit.

From ID to Reference
Every arXiv paper has an identifier and a DOI of the form 10.48550/arXiv.ID. An arXiv citation generator reads the record behind that DOI, with authors, title, year and version, and formats it as a reference in your style.
The Preprint Number Included
Most styles want the arXiv number in the reference so readers can find the exact paper, as in Attention Is All You Need (arXiv:1706.03762). The tool adds it for you, together with the DOI link.
A Check for the Published Version
Many preprints later appear in journals or conference proceedings. The tool asks arXiv whether the authors have recorded a journal reference or DOI and, if they have, offers to cite that version in one click. If no journal version is recorded, the arXiv citation stays a preprint reference, which is correct.
Why Use Our arXiv Citation Generator?
Every ID Format
New IDs, pre-2007 IDs with a subject prefix, abs and pdf links, and version suffixes such as v7 all work. An arXiv citation always points to the paper, while you can note the version you read.
Nine Styles and BibTeX
Switch between APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago, Harvard, IEEE, Vancouver, AMA and ACS, or add the paper to your list and copy the whole list as BibTeX for LaTeX.
Cite other sources in the citation generatorStraight Into Overleaf
Writing in LaTeX? Copy the BibTeX entry into your .bib file, or use DOI to BibTeX with the arXiv DOI for the same record. Each arXiv citation in BibTeX keeps the DOI so readers can follow the link.
Open DOI to BibTeXHow to Use It in 3 Steps
Step 1: Paste the arXiv ID
Copy the ID or the link from the arXiv abstract page, paste it into the arXiv citation generator and press Cite.
Step 2: Check for a Published Version
If a yellow note appears, the paper has been published. Cite the published version unless you specifically used the preprint.
Step 3: Copy the Citation
Fix the title capitalisation if your style needs sentence case, then copy the reference and in-text citation, or add the paper to your list. The arXiv citation updates as you edit each field.

arXiv Citation Generator FAQ
- What is arXiv?
- arXiv (pronounced “archive”) is a free, open-access repository of preprints in physics, mathematics, computer science, statistics, quantitative biology, economics and related fields. It was started by Paul Ginsparg in 1991 and is run by Cornell University.
- Is arXiv peer reviewed?
- No. arXiv moderators check that submissions are on topic and scholarly in form, but papers are not peer reviewed. Many are later published in peer-reviewed venues, which is why the generator checks for a published version when it builds an arXiv citation.
- Do you cite arXiv papers or the journal paper?
- Cite the journal or conference version when one exists, since it is the reviewed record. Cite the arXiv version if it has not been published, or if you relied on content that only appears in the preprint, and say which version you used. For conference papers in computer science, the proceedings version is usually the one to cite.
- How to cite arXiv?
- Give the authors, year, title, the arXiv identifier and the DOI or link. In APA: Vaswani, A., et al. (2017). Attention is all you need (arXiv:1706.03762). arXiv. https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.1706.03762. Paste the ID above and the arXiv citation is built for you.
- How to cite arXiv in Mendeley?
- Add the paper to Mendeley with its browser importer from the arXiv page, or import a BibTeX entry copied from here, then insert it with Mendeley Cite in Word. Check that the item type is Preprint so styles print it correctly. Mendeley then builds the same arXiv citation from that entry.
- How to cite arXiv BibTeX?
- Add the paper to your list and press Copy as BibTeX. Many people then cite it with \cite{key} as a @misc or @article entry with eprint and archivePrefix fields when they use biblatex; plain BibTeX styles print the arXiv number from the note or journal field.
- How to cite arXiv APA?
- APA 7 treats an arXiv paper as a preprint: Author, A. A. (Year). Title of preprint (arXiv:ID). arXiv. https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.ID. Use sentence case for the title, which you may need to fix by hand. This page shows the APA arXiv citation by default.
- What is arXiv ID?
- The unique number arXiv gives each paper. Since 2007 it has the form YYMM.NNNNN, such as 2303.08774; older papers use a subject prefix, such as hep-th/9711200. A suffix like v2 marks a version, and the DOI is 10.48550/arXiv followed by the ID. The ID is the most reliable part of an arXiv citation, because titles can change between versions.
- How to see how many cited in arXiv?
- arXiv itself does not show citation counts. Follow the links on the abstract page to NASA ADS, Semantic Scholar or INSPIRE-HEP, or search the title in Google Scholar and use its Cited by count. A higher count does not change how you write the arXiv citation itself.
- Does the arXiv citation generator find the published version?
- Yes, when the authors have recorded it on arXiv. The tool reads the journal reference and DOI from the arXiv record and shows a note with a button that loads the published version. Authors do not always update arXiv, so search the title too.
- Which arXiv IDs and links can I paste?
- New IDs such as 1706.03762, old IDs such as hep-th/9711200 or math.GT/0211159, an arXiv: prefix, version suffixes, and arxiv.org abs or pdf links. Every form produces the same arXiv citation for the paper.
