What Is an AMA Citation Generator?

Numbered References for Medicine

AMA style numbers sources in the order you cite them and marks each citation with a superscript number. An AMA citation generator formats the reference list entry that each number points to.

Compact, Punctuation-Light Entries

AMA writes authors as surname and initials without full stops, LeCun Y, italicises the journal name and joins year, volume, issue and pages as 2015;521(7553):436-444, ending with the DOI.

Built for PubMed Sources

Paste a PMID or PubMed link and the AMA citation generator reads the record from NCBI, so author lists, journal, volume and pages match what PubMed holds. PMCIDs and PubMed links work too.

Why Use Our AMA Citation Generator?

From DOI, PMID or ISBN

Most clinical sources have a PMID or DOI. Our AMA citation generator looks them up in PubMed, Crossref and DataCite, and books by ISBN in Open Library.

A Numbered List in Citation Order

Add sources in the order you cite them and the list keeps that order and numbering, ready to paste under References in Word or Google Docs.

AMA Citation Generator FAQ

What is AMA citation?
The citation style of the American Medical Association, set out in the AMA Manual of Style. It is used by JAMA and many medical, nursing and health science journals and courses, and cites sources with superscript numbers.
How to do AMA in text citations?
Use superscript Arabic numerals in the order sources are first cited. Place them outside full stops and commas but inside colons and semicolons, as in recent trials.³ Cite several at once as ²,⁵ or a range as ²⁻⁵.
How to do AMA citation?
Number sources in citation order, mark each in the text with a superscript number, and list them under References by number. Paste each source into the AMA citation generator to get the entry.
How to add AMA citation in Word?
Word has no built-in AMA style. Copy the references from the AMA citation generator, then type each number in the text and format it as superscript, or use Zotero or EndNote, which include AMA and number citations for you.
Are AMA citations in alphabetical order?
No. The reference list is numbered in the order sources are first cited in the text, and each source keeps its number when cited again. This differs from APA and MLA, whose lists are alphabetical, so renumber the list whenever you add a source earlier in the paper.
Is AMA citation the same as APA?
No. APA is author-date, (LeCun et al., 2015), with an alphabetical list. AMA uses superscript numbers and a numbered list. AMA is close to Vancouver, which also numbers sources but uses brackets and no italics.
What does AMA citation look like?
A journal article: LeCun Y, Bengio Y, Hinton G. Deep learning. Nature. 2015;521(7553):436-444. doi:10.1038/nature14539. The journal name is in italics and the DOI comes last.
How to get AMA citation from PubMed?
PubMed’s Cite button offers AMA format for each record. You can also paste the PMID into the AMA citation generator, which also lets you edit the entry and add it to a numbered list.
How many authors to list in AMA citation?
List all authors when there are six or fewer. With more than six, list the first three followed by et al. Write each as surname and initials without full stops, such as Hinton G.
Are AMA citations double spaced?
Follow your journal or instructor. Manuscripts for AMA journals are double spaced throughout, references included. Entries are numbered, not set with a hanging indent. Most instructors also want the References on a new page.
Can AMA citations be to website?
Yes. Author. Title of page. Website name. Published date. Updated date. Accessed date. URL. Paste the link into the AMA citation generator; it fills in today as the accessed date.
How to AMA citation book?
Author AA. Book Title. Edition. Publisher; Year. Add the chapter title and editors before the book title when you cite a chapter. Paste the ISBN to fill in the details.
Does this AMA citation generator use the 11th edition?
Yes. It uses the official CSL style for the AMA Manual of Style, 11th edition (2020), which replaced the 10th edition and, for example, writes DOIs as doi:10.xxxx without a URL prefix.
Does the AMA citation generator abbreviate journal names?
Yes, when the record has one. Crossref supplies the short journal title, such as JAMA or N Engl J Med, which fills the Journal abbreviation field and is printed in the reference. If the field is empty, type the NLM Catalog abbreviation there before you copy.
Can I create an AMA citation from a DOI?
Yes. Paste the DOI or a doi.org link and press Cite. The details come from Crossref or DataCite, and the DOI ends the reference in AMA format.
How do I make an AMA citation for a PDF?
Cite the article or report the PDF contains. Paste the DOI or PMID printed on its first page, or choose Report and fill in the agency, title, year and URL.
