What Are Typst Symbols?

Typst Symbols Are Named, Not Escaped

Typst symbols are typed by name inside dollar signs, with no backslash: alpha, arrow.r, in. The names come from the sym module, which Typst makes available in every formula.

Modifiers Build Variants

A dot adds a modifier: arrow.r is →, arrow.r.double is ⇒ and arrow.r.long is ⟶. Most Typst symbols follow this pattern, so learning one name leads you to a whole family.

Shorthands for Common Typst Symbols

Frequent symbols also have short forms, such as -> for → and != for ≠, which keep formulas short and easy to read. Typst symbols written as shorthands and as full names produce exactly the same character.

Why Use Our Typst Symbols Table?

Typst Symbols Next to Their Glyphs

See each name beside the character it prints, instead of guessing whether ⊆ is subset.eq or subseteq. Shorthands are listed with the full names, and the groups follow the way the sym module organises them.

One Click to Copy

Each tile copies its name, ready to paste into a formula. The search box finds Typst symbols by name or by a pasted character.

Coming From LaTeX?

Compare these names with the LaTeX math symbols table; most Typst symbols map one to one onto a LaTeX command.

How to Use It in 3 Steps

Step 1: Search the Table

Type a name or part of one, such as arrow or eq, to filter the Typst symbols, or paste the character you need.

Step 2: Copy the Name

Click the tile; the name from the Typst symbols table is now on your clipboard.

Step 3: Use It in Math Mode

Paste it between dollar signs in your .typ file. In ordinary text, prefix it with #sym., as in #sym.arrow.r. Both forms work the same in the Typst web app and the command-line compiler.

Typst Symbols FAQ

How to bold Typst?
In text, wrap words in asterisks, as in *bold*, or use #strong. In maths, bold(x) sets a symbol in bold, which suits vectors and matrices.
How to do not subset in Typst?
Add .not to the name: subset.not gives ⊄ and subset.eq.not gives ⊈. The same pattern gives in.not for ∉.
Is there a full list of Typst symbols?
This page covers the Typst symbols used most in maths. The complete catalogue, well over a thousand names, is in the sym module of the official Typst documentation, where each entry also lists the modifiers it accepts.
How do I find a Typst symbol by name or by drawing it?
Search this table by name or paste the character itself. To sketch a symbol and get its name, Detypify does for Typst what Detexify does for LaTeX. If you already know the LaTeX command, the LaTeX math symbols table is another way in.
What are Typst symbol shorthands?
Short forms for frequent symbols in maths: -> for →, => for ⇒, != for ≠, <= for ≤, >= for ≥ and |-> for ↦. They are listed beside the full names above.
How do Typst symbol names compare with LaTeX commands?
Typst symbols drop the backslash and use dotted names: \rightarrow becomes arrow.r, \leq becomes lt.eq or <=, and \alpha stays alpha. Modifiers such as .not and .double build the variants.
How do I write arrows and implications in Typst?
arrow.r gives →, arrow.r.double gives ⇒ and arrow.l.r gives ↔, with -> and => as shorthands. Long arrows add .long, as in arrow.r.long, and arrow.r.bar gives ↦ for maps. For text over an arrow, write stretch(->)^"text".
How do I write Greek letters in Typst?
Type the name with no backslash: alpha, beta, Gamma, Delta. Alternative shapes use .alt, as in epsilon.alt and phi.alt. Unlike LaTeX, Typst also names the capitals that look like Latin letters, such as Alpha.
How do I write set symbols in Typst?
in gives ∈, in.not ∉, subset ⊂, subset.eq ⊆, union ∪ and inter ∩. Number sets are doubled capitals: RR, NN, ZZ, QQ and CC, and emptyset gives ∅.
How do I write logic symbols in Typst?
forall gives ∀, exists gives ∃ and not gives ¬; and and or give ∧ and ∨. For exclusive or, plus.circle gives ⊕.
How do I write multiplication and division signs in Typst?
times gives ×, div gives ÷ and dot.op gives ⋅. times.circle gives ⊗ for tensor products. All of them are spaced as binary operators automatically, so there is no need to add space by hand.
How do I write approx, equivalent and similar in Typst?
approx gives ≈, equiv gives ≡, tilde.op gives ∼ and prop gives ∝; tilde.equiv gives ≅ for congruence. Add .not for the crossed-out forms, as in equiv.not.
How do I define my own symbol in Typst?
Use a let binding, for example #let dd = math.upright("d"), then write dd in your formulas. A function works the same way for anything that takes an argument. Keep shared definitions in one file and import it into each document.
How do I insert Unicode and special text symbols in Typst?
Type the character directly, since Typst files are UTF-8, or use names such as #sym.copyright. Escape #, $ and * with a backslash, and write \u{2192} for any code point.
Can I use icons such as check marks in Typst?
sym.checkmark gives ✓ and sym.ballot gives ☐. For full icon sets such as Lucide or Tabler, add a package from Typst Universe.
How do I control the space around Typst symbols?
Typst spaces operators and relations by itself. Add space with thin, med, thick or quad, and wrap a symbol in class("normal", …) to stop it being spaced as an operator.
How do I put a hat or arrow over a symbol in Typst?
hat(x) gives x̂ and arrow(v) puts an arrow over v; tilde, macron, dot and breve work the same way, and accent(x, …) takes any mark.
How do I copy a Typst symbol name from this page?
Click a tile and its name goes to your clipboard, with a tick to confirm. Paste it between dollar signs in your Typst file. If your browser blocks the clipboard, select the name on the tile and copy it by hand.
Why does a symbol name from this page not work in my Typst version?
The Typst symbols here follow version 0.13, and some names changed along the way; inter, for example, was called sect before. Update Typst or use the older name.
Is Typst better than LaTeX?
Typst compiles in milliseconds and has simpler syntax, with Typst symbols written as plain names such as arrow.r instead of backslash commands. LaTeX still has far more packages, journal templates and collaborators who know it. Many people draft in Typst and keep LaTeX for submissions that require it.
