LaTeX Arrows

Every common LaTeX arrow in one searchable table: single, double and long arrows, harpoons, negated arrows and arrows with labels. Click a tile to copy its command and see which LaTeX arrows need amsmath or amssymb. Free, and it runs in your browser.

What Are LaTeX Arrows?

LaTeX Arrow Commands in Math Mode

Each arrow is a command such as \rightarrow or \Leftarrow, named after its direction and style. A LaTeX arrow only prints in math mode, so put it between dollar signs or inside an equation environment.

Single, Double and Long Arrows

Lowercase names give single arrows, capitalised names give double ones, and a long prefix stretches them. So \Longrightarrow is the long double LaTeX arrow pointing right, and \longleftarrow is the long single one pointing left.

LaTeX Arrows With Text Above or Below

Labelled arrows from amsmath, such as \xrightarrow, grow to fit their text. They suit maps in algebra, conditions over a reaction and limits written under an arrow.

Why Use Our LaTeX Arrows Table?

Every LaTeX Arrow, One Click to Copy

Tiles copy the command at once, so there is no need to remember whether it is \Longleftrightarrow or \longleftrightarrow. The search box narrows the table as you type.

Packages Marked on Each LaTeX Arrow

Arrows that come from amssymb or amsmath say so on the tile, which saves a failed compile when you paste them into a document that does not load the package.

Operators and Relations Too

Equals signs, set symbols, sums and integrals sit in the math symbols table, built the same way as these LaTeX arrows. Greek letters have a table of their own as well.

How to Use It in 3 Steps

Step 1: Find the Arrow

Browse the LaTeX arrow groups or search by name, such as harpoon or long, or paste the arrow itself into the search box.

Step 2: Copy It

Click the tile and the LaTeX arrow command is on your clipboard, with a tick to confirm.

Step 3: Paste Into Math Mode

Paste it between dollar signs or into an equation, load amsmath or amssymb if the tile asks for it, and compile. If the result looks too short, swap in the long form or a labelled LaTeX arrow.

LaTeX Arrows FAQ

How to type arrow in LaTeX?
In math mode, \rightarrow (or \to) gives →, \leftarrow gives ← and \Rightarrow gives ⇒. Every LaTeX arrow in the table above copies with a click.
How to put an arrow above a letter in LaTeX?
Use \vec{v} for a short vector arrow, or \overrightarrow{AB} for an arrow spanning several letters. \overleftarrow points the other way.
How to write text above arrow in LaTeX?
Load amsmath and write \xrightarrow{text}, or \xrightarrow[below]{above} for text on both sides. The arrow stretches to fit.
How to draw arrows in LaTeX?
For arrows in figures, between table cells or around a diagram, use TikZ, for example \draw[->] (0,0) -- (1,1). For commutative diagrams, tikz-cd is the usual choice. The arrows.meta library adds tip shapes such as Stealth and Latex.
How to do double arrow in LaTeX?
\Rightarrow gives ⇒, \Leftrightarrow gives ⇔ and \leftrightarrow gives ↔. Their long forms are \Longrightarrow and \Longleftrightarrow.
How to write right arrow in LaTeX?
\rightarrow, or its short form \to, gives →. Use \Rightarrow for ⇒ and \longrightarrow for a longer arrow.
How to do implies arrow in LaTeX?
With amsmath, \implies gives ⟹ with extra space around it, and \impliedby and \iff give ⟸ and ⟺. Without amsmath, use \Longrightarrow.
How to do a double arrow for chemical formula LaTeX?
Use \rightleftharpoons for ⇌ in maths, or load mhchem and write \ce{A <=> B}, which draws reaction and equilibrium arrows for you. mhchem also puts text above an arrow, as in \ce{->[heat]}.
How to create a long right arrow in LaTeX?
\longrightarrow gives ⟶ and \Longrightarrow gives ⟹. For an arrow of any length, use \xrightarrow from amsmath with a label.
How to use arrows in text in LaTeX?
Wrap the command in math mode inside the sentence, as in $\rightarrow$. Outside math, textcomp's \textrightarrow prints → too. In a section title, keep it in math mode and add \texorpdfstring if you use hyperref.
Which package do LaTeX arrows need?
Most LaTeX arrows are built in. amssymb adds negated, curved and paired arrows such as \nrightarrow and \leadsto, and amsmath adds \implies and \xrightarrow.
What is the difference between \to and \rightarrow?
None: \to is a shorter name for \rightarrow and prints the same →. Many authors use \to for limits and maps and \rightarrow elsewhere.
How do I make an arrow stretch to fit its label?
Use \xrightarrow or \xleftarrow from amsmath; the LaTeX arrow grows with its label. mathtools adds more, such as \xleftrightarrow.
How do I write a crossed-out arrow in LaTeX?
amssymb provides \nrightarrow, \nleftarrow, \nRightarrow and \nLeftrightarrow. For other arrows, \not in front works, though the slash may sit off-centre; the centernot package places it more neatly.
How do I write harpoons and equilibrium arrows?
\rightharpoonup, \leftharpoondown and their relatives give single harpoons, and \rightleftharpoons gives the equilibrium ⇌. For chemistry, mhchem is easier.
How do I write injection and isomorphism arrows?
\hookrightarrow (↪) is common for injections and embeddings, \twoheadrightarrow (↠) for surjections, and \xrightarrow{\sim} for an isomorphism. Use \xrightarrow with a letter when you also need to name the map.
How do I write a function arrow such as f: A → B or x ↦ y?
Write f\colon A \to B for the map and x \mapsto y for where an element goes. \longmapsto gives a longer ↦.
Can I type → directly instead of an arrow command?
With XeLaTeX or LuaLaTeX and unicode-math, typing → in maths works like \rightarrow. pdfLaTeX needs the command: arrows pasted from a web page usually stop the compile with an unknown Unicode character error.
Can I use arrows as list bullets?
Yes. \renewcommand{\labelitemi}{$\rightarrow$} changes the first-level bullet in every list, or enumitem's label option changes a single list. Arrow bullets suit short lists of steps or consequences.
How do I copy an arrow command from this page?
Click any LaTeX arrow tile and its command goes to your clipboard, with a tick to confirm. Search by name, such as harpoon, or paste → to find it.
