JSON Formatter
Paste JSON and this JSON formatter validates it and prints it with clean indentation, or squeezes it onto one line. Sort keys alphabetically, choose 2 spaces, 4 spaces or tabs, and see exactly where any syntax error is. Everything happens in your browser.
What Is a JSON Formatter?
A JSON Formatter Makes Data Readable
APIs and log files often return JSON on a single line. A JSON formatter adds line breaks and indentation so you can follow the structure at a glance. Each nested level steps further in, so you can see which values belong together.
Validation Built In
Formatting needs a full parse, so invalid JSON is caught straight away, with the line and column of the first error. Duplicate keys are allowed by the parser; the last value wins, as in most programs.
Minify and Sort Keys
The same tool goes the other way, removing whitespace for compact output, and can sort keys so documents are easier to compare. Switch between views at any time without retyping anything.
Why Use Our JSON Formatter?
An Online JSON Formatter With No Install
Open the page and paste; the JSON formatter needs no extension, no account and no editor plugin. It works the same on a laptop, a tablet or a phone.
Safe for Sensitive Data
Nothing is uploaded, so tokens, keys and personal data in your JSON never leave the browser. That makes it safe for production data and private configuration files.
Browse all free toolsWorking With Tables Too?
For comma-separated data, the CSV viewer shows files as a searchable table.
Open the CSV viewerHow to Use It in 3 Steps
Step 1: Paste Your JSON
Paste an API response, a config file or a log line into the box. A whole file works as well as a short snippet.
Step 2: Pick the Output
Choose the indentation, or tick Minify or Sort keys. The output updates the moment you change an option.
Step 3: Copy or Download
The JSON formatter shows the result instantly; copy it or download it as a .json file. Errors are shown above the output with the exact line and column.

JSON Formatter FAQ
- What is JSON format?
- JSON, short for JavaScript Object Notation, is a text format for structured data: objects in curly braces holding "key": value pairs, arrays in square brackets, and strings, numbers, true, false and null as values. It is the most common format for web APIs and configuration files.
- How to format JSON?
- Paste it into a JSON formatter such as this one: it parses the text and prints it again with consistent indentation, one property per line. Choose 2 spaces, 4 spaces or tabs. The JSON formatter never changes the values themselves, only the spacing around them.
- How to convert data into JSON format?
- Most programming languages and many apps can export JSON directly; for a spreadsheet, export CSV and run it through a CSV to JSON converter or a short script. Then paste the result here to check and tidy it. Make sure numbers stay numbers and are not quoted as strings by mistake.
- How to convert JSON file to readable format?
- Paste the minified or one-line JSON above and the JSON formatter indents it, so nested objects and arrays line up and are easy to follow. Long arrays of numbers stay one value per line, which is easy to scan.
- How to convert JSON into table format?
- An array of objects maps naturally to a table: each object is a row and each key a column. Spreadsheet programs can import such JSON, or convert it to CSV and open it in the CSV viewer. Nested objects need flattening first, for example by joining keys with dots.
- How is the YAML data format structure different from JSON?
- YAML uses indentation instead of braces and brackets, allows comments and needs fewer quotes, which makes it easier to write by hand. JSON is stricter and more common for data exchange. Any JSON document is also valid YAML 1.2, so converting that way is straightforward.
- How to check JSON format?
- Paste it here. Valid JSON comes back formatted with a confirmation, and invalid JSON makes the JSON formatter point to the line and column where parsing failed. Fix that spot, and the JSON formatter checks the rest as you type.
- How to insert date in JSON format?
- JSON has no date type, so dates are stored as strings, usually in ISO 8601 form such as 2026-11-05T14:30:00Z, or as a number of milliseconds since 1 January 1970. Include the time zone, ideally UTC with a Z, so the value means the same everywhere.
- Is this JSON formatter also a validator?
- Yes. Every paste is parsed strictly, so trailing commas, single quotes, unquoted keys and other mistakes are reported with their position. Comments are reported as errors too, since standard JSON does not allow them.
- Do I need a browser extension to format JSON?
- No. This JSON formatter works in any browser tab with nothing to install; an extension only helps if you want JSON pages formatted automatically while you browse. Bookmark the page and the JSON formatter is one click away.
- Can I minify JSON to one line?
- Yes. Tick Minify and the output drops every space and line break, which makes the file smaller to send or store. Untick it again to switch back to the indented view.
- Can I sort JSON keys alphabetically?
- Yes. Tick Sort keys and the keys of every object, at every level, are put in alphabetical order, which makes two documents easier to compare. Array order is left alone, because it usually carries meaning.
- Can it format a big JSON file?
- Files of several megabytes format in a second or two, depending on your device. Very large files are better handled with a command-line tool such as jq. Nothing is uploaded, so file size is limited only by your browser memory.
- Can the JSON formatter fix broken JSON?
- It shows exactly where the problem is but does not guess a fix, because changing data silently could corrupt it. Common causes are a trailing comma, a missing quote or single quotes instead of double ones. After fixing one error, the next one, if any, is shown straight away.
- Can I compare two JSON documents?
- Format both with Sort keys ticked and compare the results in a diff tool; sorted, consistently indented JSON makes the real differences stand out. Indentation differences disappear once both sides use the same settings.
- How do I format JSON on the command line?
- Use jq . file.json to pretty-print it, or python -m json.tool file.json, which works wherever Python is installed. Add --indent 4 to json.tool, or --tab to jq, to change the spacing.
- Is the JSON I paste sent to a server?
- No. The JSON formatter runs in your browser, so API keys and personal data in the JSON stay on your device. Closing the tab clears everything you pasted.
