Character Counter

Paste or type any text and this character counter shows characters with and without spaces, words, sentences, paragraphs, lines and reading time as you type. It can also ignore LaTeX commands, and the text never leaves your browser.

What Is a Character Counter?

A Character Counter for Any Text

A character counter tells you how long a text is in characters rather than words, which is how limits on posts, titles, abstracts and application essays are usually measured. Students, marketers, researchers and developers all work to limits like these.

Characters With and Without Spaces

Some limits count every space and others do not. The character counter gives both totals at once, so you never have to work out which one a form wants. Seeing them together also shows how much of a text is spacing.

Words, Sentences and Lines Too

Next to the character totals you see words, sentences, paragraphs and lines, plus an estimate of how long the text takes to read. Those extra totals help when a form sets several limits at once.

Why Use Our Character Counter?

Live Counts as You Type

The character counter updates with every keystroke, so you can trim a draft word by word until it fits the limit you are writing to. There is no button to press and no page to reload.

LaTeX-Aware Counting

Writing an abstract in LaTeX? Tick one box and commands, maths and comments are left out, so you count only what readers will see. The same switch works for titles and abstracts copied straight from a .tex file.

Working to a Word Limit Instead?

For a .tex file with equations, figures and citations listed separately, the LaTeX word count is the better fit. Both tools run in the browser and share the same counting rules.

How to Use It in 3 Steps

Step 1: Paste Your Text

Paste or type into the box and the character counter starts straight away. Long documents work as well as a single sentence.

Step 2: Pick the Rule

Read the total with or without spaces, depending on the limit you are working to. Application portals usually include spaces; translators often quote without them.

Step 3: Trim and Recheck

Edit in place and watch the numbers fall until the text fits. Paste the final version once more before you submit to be sure.

Character Counter FAQ

Do spaces count as characters?
Usually yes: most limits, including X posts and university application essays, count every space as a character. Some forms count without spaces, so this character counter shows both totals side by side. When in doubt, keep under the stricter total, the one with spaces.
What is character count?
It is the number of letters, digits, spaces and punctuation marks in a text. Character counts set the limit for posts, page titles, abstracts and application essays, where length matters more than words. Search engines, social networks and admissions systems all set limits this way.
Do hashtags count as characters on Twitter?
Yes. On X, hashtags, @mentions and the rest of the text all count toward the 280-character limit for standard accounts, while every link counts as 23 characters however long it is. Images, videos and polls do not use up any of the limit.
How do you count characters?
Paste the text into a character counter such as this one and it counts every character as you type. Counting by hand works for a line or two but quickly becomes unreliable. The character counter also keeps running totals of words and lines while you edit.
What is the difference between word count and character count?
Word count is the number of words; character count is the number of individual characters, usually including spaces. A 250-word abstract comes to roughly 1,500 to 1,700 characters with spaces. English averages about five letters per word plus a space, so six characters per word is a useful rule of thumb.
What is the maximum character count for photo captions?
Instagram captions can run to 2,200 characters, and X posts to 280 for standard accounts. Paste a draft here to see how close you are before you post it. LinkedIn posts allow about 3,000 characters and a single SMS 160, or fewer when it contains emoji.
Does a comma count as a character?
Yes. Commas, full stops, digits, underscores, symbols and spaces each count as one character. Line breaks count too in most systems, which is why this tool also shows lines. Accented letters such as é count as one character, the same as plain letters.
Can I count characters without spaces?
Yes. The character counter shows the total with spaces and, beside it, the total without spaces, tabs or line breaks, so you can match whichever rule a form uses. Totals without spaces are common in translation quotes and some journal title limits.
Does it count Chinese characters and emoji correctly?
Yes. Each Chinese, Japanese or Korean character counts as one, and so does most emoji. Some websites count certain emoji as two characters, so leave a small margin near a hard limit. Arabic, Hindi and other scripts are counted character by character in the same way.
Can I count characters in LaTeX source?
Tick Ignore LaTeX commands and the character counter strips commands, maths and comments first, so you see the length of the text a reader sees. It suits abstracts written in LaTeX. Untick the box again to count the raw source, commands included.
Does it count lines and paragraphs too?
Yes. Alongside characters it shows words, sentences, paragraphs and lines. A paragraph is any block of text separated from the next by a blank line. Sentences are counted at full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, in English and Chinese alike.
Does the character counter show reading time?
Yes, at 238 words a minute, an average for adult silent reading. For speaking time or a different pace, use the reading time calculator. The estimate rounds to the nearest second and updates as the text changes.
How accurate is this character counter?
This character counter counts exactly what you paste, including spaces and line breaks. Other sites may count emoji as two or ignore line breaks, so check the rule your platform uses. For academic limits, the count shown here matches what most submission systems report.
Do I need an app or extension to count characters?
No. This character counter works in any web browser, phones included, with nothing to download, no extension and no account. Bookmark the page and the character counter is one click away whenever you need it.
Is the text I paste stored anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser and the text is never sent to a server, so drafts and personal statements stay private. Closing the tab clears everything you typed.
How to reduce character count in personal statement?
Cut filler phrases, merge sentences that repeat an idea, and swap long words for short ones. Paste each draft into the character counter to see the total with spaces, which is what most application portals such as AMCAS and UCAS count, and keep a small margin under the limit.
